After losing her father at 3 years old, Phiona and her family were left homeless in the slum town of Katwe in Uganda’s capital, Kampala. Forced to drop out of school and with the family still struggling, Phonia, at age 9, discovers the SOM Chess Academy, but initially only sets foot inside to get a meal. She would soon learn the game of chess and discover a passion for the game as well as a pathway to endless opportunities. Phiona’s story is one of strength, resilience, love for the game and so much inspiration. Read the book inspired by her triumphant true story or watch the movie (on Netflix) and be sure to meet her here at NorCal House of Chess!
